Recommended Resources
A small (but growing) collection of resources for, by, and about trans and gender expansive community and experiences.
This collection has been curated by Tiffany Sostar and the Groundfire team, and includes resources shared by contributors to the Dreaming Trans Affirming Mental Health Care Into Existence: A Wish List From Trans People project, and others.
Websites
A curated list of websites that include useful information and resources.
Transgender Language Primer: a glossary of terms used within the community and our overlap with other communities: https://translanguageprimer.com/
The Transgender Language Primer has been on indefinite hiatus since 2025, and is not currently being updated. Preferred language changes over time, but even so this website is an incredible effort of community contribution by a group of disabled trans folks between 2015 and 2025, and the information here is solid.
Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/
Trans Lifeline provides peer support that is divested from police involvement, which means they will not call a wellness check on users. Their website includes a lot of information on why this is, and why it matters. They offer chat and calls, along with the resource library, and they are US-based.
Trans Wellness Initiative: https://transwellnessinitiative.ca/
The Trans Wellness Initiative is based in Alberta and offers support and a range of community-led resources. The zines on accessing HRT and gender-affirming care in Alberta are out of date (as of 2026) but the provider and community resources are excellent.
TransCareBC: https://www.transcarebc.ca/
Based in BC, with a huge library of resources for community members and practitioners.
Sylvia Rivera Law Project: https://srlp.org/about/who-was-sylvia-rivera/
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project is based in New York, and they do a wide range of incredibly important work.
Essays and articles
Short (and long) essays and articles.
The Trans Literature Preservation Project: A Practical Guide to Resisting Censorship
This guide to fighting censorship has been put together by The Transfeminine Review (which is a fantastic blog by and about transfeminine literature). The guide offers an accessible introduction to why fighting censorship matters, and how we can all contribute to protecting community knowledge through things like microlibraries, as well as a history of censorship and fascism. This is written primarily for a US audience, but is relevant for anyone.
How To Read A Trans Fem Writer: an essay, an instruction manual, a trans fem writer manifesto, a plea, and a prayer by Maya Deane & Kai Cheng Thom
This essay from 2024 remains a favourite of Tiffany's (and actually they would recommend all of Kai Cheng Thom's essays). Reading trans literature (fiction, non-fiction, comics, essays, poetry, all of it!) is one of the best things you can do to resist the flood of anti-trans ideas that we are all being subjected to these days.
Singular "they" and the many reasons why it's correct by Motivated Grammar
This is an old blog post (from 2009!) and the blog is no longer being updated. It's mainly shared here because it's still accurate and because it is shockingly still a topic of debate.
Pronoun Etiquette Guide: https://reshapingreality.org/2018/07/30/pronoun-etiquette-guide/
A group commissioned one of the 'Dreaming trans affirming mental health care into existence: A wish list from trans folks' contributors to make this guide.
Non-fiction books
For when you want more than an essay (or more than one essay).
This Bookshop.org list features a curated list of nonfiction for and by trans people, with 25% of the profits from sales going to the Transgender Law Project: https://bookshop.org/lists/transgender-and-gender-nonconforming-non-fiction-books
Surviving the Future: Abolitionist Queer Strategies edited by Shuli Branson, Raven Hudsen, and Bry Reed (2023)
This essay collection includes trans writers and their analysis of justice and oppression.
The Transgender Issue: An Argument for Justice by Shon Faye (2022)
Histories of the Transgender Child by Jules Gill-Peterson (2018)
A Short History of Trans Misogyny by Jules Gill-Peterson (2025)
Black on Both Sides: A Racial History of Trans Identity by C. Riley Snorton (2017)
Transgender Warriors: The Making of History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman by Leslie Feinberg: https://www.beacon.org/Transgender-Warriors-P463.aspx

Miss Major Speaks by Miss Major Griffin-Gracy and Toshio Meronek: https://www.versobooks.com/products/2787-miss-major-speaks
Non-fiction books for families, children and young adults
Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon (2020)
This is an illustrated book, for ages 12 and up.
The Gender Book by Hunter Rook, Jay Mays, and others: https://thegenderbook.com/ (the website includes a bunch of content from the book available for free download, including graphics that can be used in educational slideshows with attribution)
Fiction books
We should all be reading more trans fiction.
TV and movies
And watching more trans media.
Games and other media
And playing more trans games.
